Math Boot Camp:

How Can We Increase Our Capacity?

When school starts this fall, how will our team provide comprehensive and effective math instruction for ALL students in our schools?

This week-long offering will focus on increasing a deeper understanding of mathematical content with attention to integrating instructional and assessment practices to support math learning.  This workshop will have elementary and secondary breakout groups.  The elementary content will include a focus on whole number concepts and the secondary content will include a focus on rational number concepts.

45 hours (direct contact time)*

through CDE

or

45 hours (direct contact time)* independent study/reflection paper = 4 semester hours** of credit from Adams State College

*Workshop participants will be required to sign in regularly as evidence of their attendance.  Participants will also need to indicate their preference for CDE professional-development hours or Adams State credit before the end of the final day of a given workshop.  Finally, CDE certificates will need to be picked up at the end of the final day of each workshop.

**Participants attending all three workshops and electing to receive Adams State Credit have an additional two options for credit:

1) Participants may receive seven semester hours of credit ($60.00 per credit hour), as documented on transcripts from Adams State College or

2) In conjunction with their seven semester hours of credit, participants may also elect to receive a ÒMath Interventionist Certificate of Completion.Ó  The Òcertificate of completionÓ indicates a customized, high-quality program of study regarding math education and interventions for struggling students.  It thus creates a portable credential for workshop participants (who attend and successfully complete all three workshops), documenting the knowledge and skills acquired in the workshop sequence.  Participants electing to receive the Òcertificate of completionÓ will need to pay Adams State an additional $100.00 for the processing of the certificate.  It is estimated that ÒMath Interventionist Certificates of CompletionÓ will be available in September or October of 2010.

Regarding whether the courses above may meet the requirements of Òhighly qualifiedÓ status, participants are strongly encouraged to speak with school-district human-resources personnel.  Individual school districts view Òhighly qualifiedÓ requirements in different ways, thus, conference organizers encourage direct contact with oneÕs school district regarding this question.
